Who has created these courses? The RAE Institute for Clinical Research, Assessment, and Education was created as a joint effort between two Registered Senior Psychologists, Janet Ryan-Newell and Dr. Cory Hrushka. Having independently developed clinical service systems, emergent practitioner training programs, and comprehensive assessments services for their own agencies, they decided to combine their decades of expertise. RAE Institute, offers emerging clinicians and private practitioners access to their training series and clinical practice resources, delivered using synchronous and asynchronous models. These programs are in turn facilitated by expert psychologists, clinical psychometrists, court experts, mediation specialists, disability care experts, behavior specialists, as well as family and parenting specialists. If you are committed to professionalism, practice excellence, and have a desire to increase your clinical skills and practice efficiencies, the RAE Institute for Clinical Research, Assessment, and Education has developed the best programs for you.

Will completing these courses qualify me to practice formal assessment? The Formal Clinical Assessment program alone will not qualify a clinician to practice formal assessment. To ethically practice formal clinical assessment, clinicians must declare their competency in this area of practice. Working in assessment without competency can be very harmful, not only to the public, but also for the clinician if they were to ever have a complaint filed against them with the College of Alberta Psychologists. Our RAE Institute courses do provide instruction and allow for students to apply what they have learned in hands-on practical exercises; however, this alone does not qualify a clinician to declare their competency in formal assessment. Provisional psychologists must still be supervised by a psychologist that has declared their competency in formal assessment and must complete a minimum of 400 hours in Alberta or 600 hours in Canada to be considered competent in this area of practice. While fully registered psychologists are not under supervision in the same way that Provisional psychologists are, it can be just as difficult to prove your competency while not working with an active supervisor. Once again, practicing out of scope can result in a complaint with the college and if a clinician is not able to prove that they are competent in assessment then they could be at risk.

I don’t have a supervisor; will I be able to take these courses? The Applied Practice courses do not require a student to have a supervisor. It is at the discretion of the student if they wish to count program hours towards registration supervision hours. It is also the responsibility of the student to ensure that their work has been supervised, reviewed, and approved by a supervisor who is fully competent and experienced in completion of the type of assessment taught in the course. A student with an existing supervisor who is fully competent and experienced to supervise their practice assessment can proceed to complete the practice assessment under the guidance of their existing supervisor while a student who does not have a supervisor or has one who is not fully competent and/or experienced to supervise their practice assessment can request to be assigned a Clinical Assessment Supervisor by RAE Institute. Supervision hours would be at an additional cost on top of the course fees. (We are still developing this cost structure). Students have Three Options available to them: Option One: If your current supervisor has assessment competency, continue with them and have them sign off on your hours. Option Two: If your current supervisor is not competent in assessment, you can access additional supervision from a RAE, or external supervisor from our network. Option Three: If you do not have a supervisor, match with a RAE Supervisor, or external supervisor from our Linked Network. o The RAE Institute Linked Network is currently in development but we are anticipating implementing this option in 2025.

I don’t have access to the tests I need, what can I do?Students are provided with access to Q-Interactive, a Pearson portal, that allows students to access the digital versions of their tests and practice assessing mock clients. This portal only allows these assessments to be administered via iPad devices. Students located in Edmonton can also schedule time to come into the Kells Counselling office in the south side of the city. Currently, students located outside of the city of Edmonton would need to reach out to colleagues, friends, or their supervisors to borrow the required testing materials in order to proceed with this course and the final project. The list of required tests is included on the enrollment form for each Applied Practice course.
-
Do I need to bring the test materials to every single class and seminar? No. We recommend that students bring their testing materials to each seminar session taking place over the six weeks of the course; however, we also understand that if a student is borrowing their materials, that they may not have access to them for the entire length of the course. It is not a requirement for students to bring their testing materials to all six seminar sessions, but it is a recommendation. The instructors will be teaching with the physical testing materials; however, the information will be transferable to working with the digital materials for students using Q-Interactive.
-
Do I need to take all of the courses in the Formal Clinical Assessment program?Core Competencies is a prerequisite to move forward with the remaining four Applied Practice courses, and as such, is the only required course. Students do not need to complete all of the remaining four practical courses; however, if declaring competency in formal assessment is a goal for the student then we do recommend completing all five courses, and all 200 hours of continuing education, as these courses do fulfil the educational and hands-on training components required to develop competency. Students can complete the individual Applied Practice courses rather than all five courses. There will be some clinicians that are hoping to work with children, some with specific populations, and each course will offer instruction in different areas, some which may be helpful to their career paths, and some which may not be. It is at the discretion of the student which courses they wish to complete to further their careers and practice.
-
What If I want to take the Applied Practice Courses but I have not completed the Core Competencies prerequisite and missed the last intake? We will be offering Core Competencies throughout the year for students to register for and upon the successful completion of this forty-hour course, students can then move forward with enrolling in the next Applied Practice course that is open for registration. The Applied Practice courses do not need to be completed in order.
